The Pharmacy Technician Certification Process
Upon successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician training program provided by Arizona College, graduates are encouraged to pursue certification and licensing within their field. Certification is the first step towards becoming a licensed Pharmacy Technician in the state of Arizona.
As a way to enhance their resumes and provide additional validation of the knowledge they have gained, Arizona College recommends that each graduate become a Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by passing the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination. This examination is offered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. It is important to note that the CPhT is required for the Pharmacy Technician Full License in Arizona.
To practice as a Pharmacy Technician in Arizona, you must obtain a license from the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy. There are two levels of licenses: the Trainee License and the Full License.
- The Trainee License is required for our students to practice during their externships. To obtain a Trainee License, students apply at the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy with their U.S. birth certificate and high school diploma or GED. The fee is $46 for a 2 year license.
- In order to obtain a Full License, graduates must be certified by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. While going through this process, some graduates may work under a Trainee License.
In order to receive a Full License from the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy, you will first have to pass the Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE). The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) administers this exam and the issuing of certifications. When applying for a Certified License, you will be required to show proof of your PTCB certification.
Both your Certified License and PTCB certification will have to be renewed every 2 years. This requires that you successfully complete 20 hours of continuing education before renewing your certification and applying for a renewed license.
