What is Chairside Assisting?

Dental Assistants play a very important role in the dental office. The Dental Assistant often works along side the Dentist during patient examinations and procedures to assist her or him in the process. If you have had a dental examination or procedures performed by a Dentist, in most cases, a Dental Assistant was working “chairside” to assist the Dentist. Chairside Assisting refers to any operation that a Dental Assistant performs to assist the Dentist during a dental examination or procedure. Chairside Assisting can also be called, “Four-Handed Dentistry,” which refers to the Dentist’s two hands and the Dental Assistant’s two hands (totals to four hands), or “Six-Handed Dentistry”, which incorporates the Dentist, plus two Dental Assistants (totals to six hands). Dental Assisting is the perfect career path for those who possess excellent communication skills, are good at multitasking, and enjoy working one on one with patients. Dental Assistant duties range from direct patient care to record keeping. The Dental Assistant program at Arizona College sets students up for success by training them on the various instruments used in a dental office, how to perform daily tasks, assist the dentist during procedures, sterilize equipment, interact with patients, and everything else needed to keep a dental office running smoothly. The Dental Assistant has a great deal of interaction with patients, including supporting the patient during dental procedures, taking X-rays, and providing patients with postoperative instructions and general oral health information. Celebrate Dental Awareness Day on 6/28

Coming up on June 28, Dental Awareness Day is intended to raise awareness about oral hygiene and encourage people to take care of their teeth. If you are studying to become a Dental Assistant, be sure to recognize Dental Awareness Day by passing along these important oral hygiene tips: Prevent bacteria from growing in the mouth by brushing at least twice a day for two minutes and flossing daily. The bacteria that cause bad breath can easily build up on the tongue, so it’s also a good idea to use a tongue scraper or to give it a good scrub with your toothbrush. Developing these good habits will help prevent bad breath as well as tooth decay. Keep smiles bright by replacing a manual toothbrush every three or four months and follow the manufacturer’s advice on how often to replace electric brush heads. Growing Jobs in the Healthcare Industry

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, healthcare is projected to generate roughly 28% of all new jobs created in the United States by 2020. In the 2010-20 projections, healthcare is expected to grow by 33%, or 5.7 million new jobs. The growth of the healthcare industry, which is primarily made up of private and public hospitals, nursing and residential care facilities, and individual and family services, is driven by the aging population and longer life expectancies, as well as new advancements in treatments and technologies. Of those occupations in the U.S. that are growing at the quickest pace, many are related to healthcare. Both Dental Assisting and Medical Assisting jobs are expected to increase by 31% through 2020.
