Are you interested in the health care industry and looking for a rewarding, in-demand career? If you enjoy working independently, are a skilled in communicator, and possess a strong attention to detail, becoming a medical billing and coding specialist may be the right career choice for you!
Arizona College offers a 30-week Medical Billing & Coding program at our Glendale and Mesa campuses. Sessions start every 5 weeks.
Medical billers and coders (also referred to as health information specialists, medical billing and coding specialists, or medical information specialists) primarily work behind-the-scenes for health care providers. In addition to medical billing and coding responsibilities, they perform administrative tasks on their employer’s behalf, including maintaining patient records.
Though medical billing and coding specialists do not provide direct patient care themselves, physicians, nurses, and other health care providers depend on medical coders and billers to keep patients’ medical records up-to-date and organized and to ensure billing is processed for medical services. (This could include submitting paperwork to insurance companies for reimbursement.)
Completing a health information training program is an important step in becoming a medical biller and coder. In most cases, a high school diploma or equivalent is required to begin a billing and coding specialist training program.
Arizona College’s Medical Billing & Coding diploma program prepares you to be a medical biller and coder. Through completing the required coursework, you’ll gain a solid foundation in medical terminology and diagnoses, anatomy and physiology, medical coding protocols, and medical billing procedures.
When choosing your training program to become a medical biller and coder, there are many factors to consider beyond the academic portion of the curriculum, including:
Arizona College’s medical billing training gives you the knowledge, skills, and experience needed to pursue medical billing and coding certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC), American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), or the American Medical Billing Association (AMBA).
Though certification is not a requirement to become a medical biller and coder, Arizona College encourages our graduates to pursue certification to further establish their credentials and increase the odds of finding a job. Our school also provides Career Services to aid you in your post-graduation job search.
