A2 Test Sections

The HESI Assessment is designed to simply assess your current knowledge base in terms of the four categories below.  There is no need to study before your first attempt as you won’t know what areas you need the most help with.  Most students pass on the first attempt, but if you don’t, your scores will show exactly where to focus your time and what specifically you can study for the 2nd attempt to improve your scores dramatically.

HESI Admission Assessment (A2) Frequently Asked Questions

The HESI A2 Admissions Assessment, administered by Health Education Systems, Inc., uses a percentage-based scoring system. The maximum achievable score on the HESI A2 is 100%. Students receive a percentage score for each individual subtest they complete, and their overall performance is summarized by a cumulative score, which represents the average of all subtest scores.

The HESI exam consists of four individual tests designed to assess an applicant’s academic preparedness for a nursing or health sciences program. These subtests include: Reading Comprehension, Math, Anatomy & Physiology, and Vocabulary and General Knowledge.

A comprehensive score report will be available in their Evolve account approximately 24 hours later.

At Arizona College of Nursing you can retake the HESI A2 if your scores fall short of the minimum requirements up to 3 times within a 12-month period. There is a 3 calendar day waiting period imposed between the 1st and 2nd attempt, and a minimum of 5 business days waiting period is required between the 2nd and 3rd attempt.

Elsevier provides a remediation program for individuals who do not achieve a passing score on their initial HESI A2 attempt. This program is aimed at helping students enhance their performance in specific areas where they struggled. The remediation training is offered at no cost and includes online resources focused on the subjects needing improvement.

Additionally, students may want to explore the HESI Admission Assessment Exam Course, an online study program designed to thoroughly prepare individuals for the HESI A2. This course offers flexible study options, allowing students to review comprehensive lessons at their own pace.

Valuable Tips For Tackling The HESI A2 Exam:

  • Know the Test Content: As part of your HESI test prep, understand which subjects will be covered, since nursing programs may select different sections of the HESI exam. Focus your study efforts on these key areas.
  • Familiarize Yourself with Test Details: Be aware that the number of questions may vary and the 4 hour allotted time for the exam.
  • Understand the Scoring System: Instead of traditional letter grades, you’ll receive a percentage score. While a higher score is preferable, each nursing program may have its own passing criteria. Consult with your program administrators for specific requirements.
  • Utilize Study Resources: Employ a HESI study guide, use or create flashcards, and establish a study schedule.
  • Identify Weak Areas: If you’re already enrolled in a nursing program, take advantage of HESI practice tests to pinpoint and address your weak spots.
