More Than Just Facts: 4 Life Lessons Learned Through a Healthcare Training Program


Everyone’s experience in a healthcare training program is different. The medical information and training techniques that are taught will be the same, but what each student takes away from the program is as unique as the individual. When completing your training program, there are many lessons you will learn that will lead you not only in your professional career, but in your personal life as well.

    1. Maintain a healthy diet. As you will often find yourself telling your patients, you don’t need to deprive yourself, but make a conscious effort to eat mindfully not mindlessly. It’s important that when you talk the talk with your patients you walk the walk yourself – lead by example when it comes to healthy eating habits.


  1. Stay rested. Try to get seven to eight hours of sleep every night. As you have likely learned from your healthcare training, sleep deprivation is increasingly associated with more and more chronic diseases. Sleep is not only important in your day-to-day life, it is crucial in the long-term to remain in good health.
  2. Exercise. Maintaining an active lifestyle is not only important for your physical health, but your mental health as well. You’ll no doubt find yourself suggesting to your patients that they increase their levels of activity – take your own advice and get moving!
  3. Laughter is the best medicine. Well, maybe not literally, but recognize the importance of enjoying life, taking part in activities you like, and taking care of yourself and those you love.

Your efforts should of course be focused on learning the techniques, studying the materials, and putting your new medical skills into practice, but remember to be receptive to the lessons you’ll be presented with that won’t necessarily come from your text books or lecture notes.
