Health Information and Medical Assisting: Making the Right Career Choice for You

Allied Health Program

If you’re interested in a career in healthcare, but don’t have the time or money to go through medical or nursing school, maybe it’s time to consider earning your Medical Assisting or Medical Billing and Coding diploma! There are a variety of programs and colleges for potential Medical Assistants and Health Information Technicians, but how do you know which one to choose? We’ve provided you with some Health Information and Medical Assistant info to help you decide which career path suits you the best.

Medical Assistants perform face-to-face patient work as well as administrative tasks. Typical day-to-day tasks include prepping patients for medical examinations, taking vital signs and medical histories, checking patients in and out of the office, giving injections, answering the phone, collecting patient data, billing, and scheduling appointments. Professional Medical Assistants should be good at multi-tasking and enjoy working with people.

Medical Billers and Coders may also work with patients, but tend to spend more time on the computer than Medical Assistants. Specialists are in charge of patient data and organize medical records to ensure that all records are accurate, accessible, and secure. They also are responsible for processing billing and coding tasks for the office or organization. As technology continues to evolve, so will the responsibilities of Medical Billers and Coders.

Whether you’re interested in going to college to earn your Medical Assisting or Medical Billing and Coding diploma, Arizona College of Allied Health offers training in both programs; we are here to help guide you to make the right career decision for your future.
